Shaving Cream
(part of the Spelling Practice Unit)

using shaving cream to practice spelling
Practice Spelling Words using Shaving Cream, check out the video.

This is a simple and, for many children, an effective approach to practicing spelling. Using shaving cream at an early age will be a treat for your child and shaving cream feels great on the fingers.

Shaving Cream Lesson

Materials:
shaving cream (the inexpensive kind works great!)
tray or cookie sheet with an edge
spelling words from group A or B, depending on how you want to set it up
sheet protector

Steps for Group A Words:

  1. Place a group A card directly in front of a small tray or cookie sheet.
  2. Squirt a small amount of shaving cream on the tray/cookie sheet.
  3. Looking at the example in front of him, have your child write the word in the shaving cream using his fingers.
  4. After he writes a word, he will wipe the shaving cream with the side of his hand to create a smooth surface. He is then ready for his next word.

Steps for Group B Words:

  1. Place the spelling word from group B inside of the sheet protector. The sheet protector protects the word and you can use it multiple times.
  2. Then place the word on the tray or cookie sheet.
  3. Squirt a small amount of shaving cream on the sheet protector with the word inside. Use a small amount of shaving cream so that when your child spreads the shaving cream he will see the letters underneath.
  4. Have your child trace the letters of the word using his fingers.
  5. After he writes a word, he will wipe the shaving cream with the side of his hand to create a smooth surface. He is then ready for his next word.

Re-enforcement Activities

  1. The same process can be done with finger paint and the finished finger painting can be hung up as a colorful reminder of the words.
  2. Also, can be done with pudding.  The only thing to keep in mind with pudding is he will want to lick his fingers, so be sure to use a clean surface and that his hands are clean to start with and then - let the fun begin!
