Hair Gel
(part of the Spelling Practice Unit)

A simple method to practice spelling words that can be used over and over again is putting a small amount of hair gel in a plastic storage bag and sealing it, then your child can trace the letters with his finger through the gel.

Hair Gel Lesson


Materials:
hair gel (about a cup)
gallon size plastic storage bag
spelling words from group B

  1. Put the hair gel in the gallon size plastic storage bag and seal it nice and tight (you may want to tape the bag shut with packaging tape to prevent any leaks).
  2. Using a group B word, lay the bag filled with hair gel over the word.
  3. Have your child, using his finger, trace the letters of the word while he is saying each letter 3 times.

    The clean up is minimal and your son will like how the bag feels - squishy.

I also found this great looking product through Orton Gillingham that is a magnetic gel that looks very similar to the hair gel. It looks cool so if this is an effective way for your son to practice you may want to ask him if he would like to try it out. It might be something he enjoys!
