find definitions of spelling words

Have your child look up the definition for each spelling word and then, write in his own words, the definition. This is a great vocabulary building activity.

Definitions Lesson


Materials:
dictionary
spelling cards made with the Fabulous Face Flashcards Activity
old business cards or 3" x 5" cards

  1. Using the same format as the Fabulous Face Flashcards have your child make a definition card for each of his spelling word.
  2. Using a dictionary to help, have your son write out the definitions himself in his own words (this will help him to retain the information better) on the back of the old business card or 3" by 5" card. 
  3. Have your child match the spelling cards with the definition cards.  This way he can play against himself for practice.

Re-enforcement Activities

  1. The definition cards can be used with the Concentration Game, Dictionary Go Fish or the Crossword Puzzle. 
  2. Have your child write the definitions then use the word in a sentence.
