Guess the Missing Letter
(part of the Spelling Practice Unit)

practice spelling words with a game that is similiar to hangman

This game is similar to hang man in every way except the image. You get to create a drawing for your child based on his likes and you choose a word from his spelling list for him to practice.

Your child will be delighted when you attempt to draw his favorite toy or object that interests him and you will have him engaged in the activity before you even begin.

Make Drawing

  1. Choose a spelling word from group A.
  2. Start with blank lines, one for each letter for the spelling word you chose.  For example if the word is fun then you would put _ _ _ at the bottom of the paper or dry erase board.
  3. Select something your son is into, like: fire engines, robots, cars, etc. and make a simple drawing of that object with at least fifteen pieces that can be easily erased, this gives him fifteen incorrect guesses.

Don't worry about having a wonderful drawing, your son will be pleased that you made it for him.

Guess the Missing Letter Lesson

Materials:
paper, pencil and eraser or white board and dry erase markers
spelling words from group A

How to Play:

  1. Have your child guess a letter that he thinks might be in the spelling word.
    • You'll erase one piece of the finished object with every incorrect guess of a letter that doesn't belong with this word. Write the incorrect letters that are used somewhere close at hand to remind both of you which letters have been tried.
    • If he guesses correctly, you place the letter on the blank line where it belongs and don't erase anything on the drawing. Once you place the letter on the blank line give your child a chance to guess what word you have selected.
  2. You may want to add details to your drawing for correct letters to add to the fun.
  3. The idea is for you child to guess the spelling word before the object is completely erased!
