Rhyming Words
(part of the Spelling Practice Unit)

use rhyme for your children to learn their spelling words

Cat, mat, sat, fat, bat, zat…children love to make words rhyme and the sillier the words are, the better.
Your child can find words, or make some up, that rhyme with each of his spelling words.

Rhyming Words Lesson

Materials:
spelling words from group A
pencil and paper (download for $1)
rhyming dictionary (optional)

  1. Have your child find words that rhyme with his spelling words, or let him make up his own words. There are books on rhyming words he can use or your son can just make up his own nonsense words like Dr. Seuss.
  2. Explain to your child that all the current spelling words need to be included in the rhyming.  Have the spelling words handy from Group A as a reminder of the words that he needs to use.
  3. Have your child write the rhyming word next to the spelling word.
