Children learn so much when they help in the kitchen. Besides, cherishing the time with you, they learn that measuring makes a difference and it's a step towards being a self-sufficient adult. Making apple sauce is easy and yummy and your children will enjoy the fact that they helped make it while they eat it all up.
Materials:
---
6 apples
1 cup water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon sugar
1⁄4 teaspoon of the spice chosen by your child
any 3 assorted spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cardamom, garam masala, allspice
plastic knife
activity sheet pdf
As you are working with your child, watch how she is chopping up the apples. Does she understand how to hold a knife? Is she letting the serrated edge of the knife help her cut or is she using only her arm strength? These are the times you take a moment to show her how to use the knife to make it easier. Praise her when she gets it with a simple, "That's it!" If she is doing it like you want it, let her know it.
