(part of the Apple Unit)

homemade apple sauce

Children learn so much when they help in the kitchen. Besides, cherishing the time with you, they learn that measuring makes a difference and it's a step towards being a self-sufficient adult. Making apple sauce is easy and yummy and your children will enjoy the fact that they helped make it while they eat it all up.

How to Make Apple Sauce

Materials:
6 apples
1 cup water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon sugar
14 teaspoon of the spice chosen by your child
any 3 assorted spices:
cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cardamom, garam masala, allspice
plastic knife
activity sheet pdf
  1. Have your child do a sniff test to determine which spice to use. parent tip We suggest that you gently wave your hand over the open bottle of spice so the air is directed towards your child so she doesn't inhale the spices directly into her nose. She will have a definite opinion. Most children love cinnamon. There is also an activity sheet PDF for her to record her choices.
  2. To get ready to make the apple sauce, core the apples and have your child help cut apples into quarters with a plastic knife. She can cut the pieces small or large.
  3. Have your child put the apples in a pot and add water and lemon juice.
  4. Bring to boil.
  5. Turn down the heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Stir the sauce as it is cooking.
  6. Add sugar and the spice that your child liked best.
  7. Blend in a blender until smooth and serve. Enjoy hot or cold!

Assessment

As you are working with your child, watch how she is chopping up the apples. Does she understand how to hold a knife? Is she letting the serrated edge of the knife help her cut or is she using only her arm strength? These are the times you take a moment to show her how to use the knife to make it easier. Praise her when she gets it with a simple, "That's it!" If she is doing it like you want it, let her know it.
