Diorama
(part of Discovering Dinosaurs Unit)

diorama of dinosaur life

Making a diorama puts your child in the center of the activity and responsible for the direction his learning is going. There are many ways to do a diorama, let your child determine how he would like it to look. It is also a great tool to see how much he has learned along the way.

Preparation for Diorama

Materials:
shoe box
paint
construction paper in various colors
clay
toothpicks or popsicle sticks
scissors
cardboard and various items to complete the scene

  1. Once your child has determined what he wants to create, he can begin by painting the background or attaching construction paper on the back and sides of the box.
  2. He can make figures with clay or cut out of paper and attach to a toothpick or popsicle stick.  To stand them up, simply take a small piece of clay to use for the base and put the toothpick in it.
  3. Usually once children get started, they have a great time making the world in a small version.

Set-up Diorama

After he has finished building his diorama, have him explain everything that is going on to you. Usually he has more going on than a casual on-looker would be aware of. Ask questions about what you see like, "What is happening here?" or "Why is that dinosaur doing that?" so he can be the experts and explain all the details to you.
