This cake is great for the kid that loves all things dinosaur and is a lot of fun to decorate especially if your child can help you!

1. Make your favorite cake in a long rectangular pan.
   
   
2. Download the dinosaur bone template (PDF).

   Cut out the bones from the template.
   
   
4. While the cake is cooking, make the sugar cookies. The cookies will be the bones of the fossilized dinosaur.
   
   I found there is more than one way to make the cookies since they can sometimes loose their shape when they are baking:
   
   
   • The traditional way - roll out the dough on a well floured area then cut around the template pieces with a flour covered knife. You'll want the dough to be about ¹⁄₄" thick and cook it as normal.
   • A kid-friendly way - roll out the dough on a well floured area to get a more or less uniform thickness then, using the template to guide you form the shapes by tearing and piecing the dough together by hand.  The pieces don't have to be exact and if your daughter would like to add design elements - go for it!
     
   • The jiffy way - slice off the dough (if your using a pre-made cookies) and bake it. Before it cools, cut along the edge of the template onto each cookie.
     
     No matter which way you decide to form the cookies, when they come out of the oven, if they have lost their unique shapes, trim them with a knife. No worries!
     
     
5. Okay, the cake and bones (the cookies) are all made and cooling, it's time to make up the frosting. To give it a look of mud or dirt you'll need to make up chocolate frosting (the only kind my son appreciates).
   
   
6. If you're using the coconut flakes, mix some in a bowl with 4 - 6 drops of green food coloring (add more or less depending on how green you would like it).
   
   
7. Crush one package of chocolate graham crackers inside a zip-lock food storage bag with a rolling pin or the back of a spoon.
   
   
8. After you have all the elements together, you're ready to decorate. You might want to lay out the bones on the cake before you frost it to figure out the placement.
   
   
9. The eye hole on the skull was covered when I baked them so no matter which way you make the cookies, you'll have to carefully cut out the eye hole after the cookies comes out of the oven.
   
   
10. Frost the cake then arrange the bones on top.
    
    
11. Sprinkle the graham cracker crumbs all over the cake. If you place the larger chunks along the edge, it looks like the dinosaur bones are under the ground.
    
    
12. Sprinkle the green coconut along the edge for grass.
    
    
13. Your daughter will be thrilled to "eat" a dinosaur.
