Tools
(part of Discovering Dinosaurs Unit)

children using tools to dig up fossils

After brainstorming a list of necessary tools, have your child help gather them.  You may find your child carrying them around the house in anticipation.  Let him become comfortable with using the shovel and paintbrush in the backyard or in a pot.  It will help him to be comfortable using them on the day of the dig.

Collect the Tools for the Dig

Your child might suggest some of the following (or you can guide him to some you think are important):

Materials:
Toothbrush
Toothpicks or skewers
Hat
Sunscreen
Water (for thirsty young paleontologists)
Paint brush
Camera – to record the dig and their findings
Small shovel
Magnifying glass
Bucket
Backpack or kid-friendly belt with hooks to carry all of the "tools"

Gather all of the items beforehand so you won't need to look around for tools the morning of the dig.

Get Ready to Go

  1. Have your child get the tools and get ready to go!
  2. Be sure to include the field guide PDF with the tools or print the sheet specifically for the tools PDF.

Think About It!

Some questions that might be asked:

  1. What do you think we can use this tool for?
  2. Do we have everything we need? Let's look in that book about dinosaur digs.
