Conquering the Winter Blahs!

Child jumping for joy - there is snow!

With over half of the country experiencing snow, you can either be a groundhog and hide during the winter months or enjoy the wonders of the season! The likelihood is that if you hibernate all winter, so will your children. There are the usual activities: skiing, sledding, cross country skiing, ice skating and hiking with snow shoes, as well as, making snowmen and snow angels but we are going to show you new twists on them and a few things you may not have considered before to do with your children.

Did You Know

  • One inch of rain is about the same as five inches of snow? Although it can't be an exact measurement, due to temperature and other conditions, it's close. For more information on the ratio go to this website.
  • All snowflakes have 6 sides, but they all have different designs. Amazing but true! Watch this video from the Discovery Channel on snow flakes, it has some amazing images.
  • Snow is really clear crystals - they reflect all the colors of the spectrum and the combination appears white to our eyes!

When winter gets too much...

  • Plan a picnic - in the living room on a blanket, at a local botanical garden under the banana palm or at a indoor water park enjoying the tropical feel, take a picnic basket and summer treats to enjoy while your in denial.

  • Go Camping - set up a tent in the living room, pull out the blankets and shorts and make s'mores in the fireplace. Sing campfire songs and tell stories of adventures from summers past. You might want to close the blinds to keep the illusion of summer.

  • Go surfing! - Set out the ironing board flat on the floor (to serve as a make shift surf board) and cover it with a towel. Put on a swimsuit and turn up the heat and a fan to give you the feeling of an ocean breeze. Then it's time for the Beach Boys or some other summer tunes and your ready to surf up some fun! The surf board (ironing board) will be wobbly but the waves can be a little unsteady too- isn't that part of the fun? Eat your favorite summer snacks and bask in the fun - be sure to video tape the happenings to watch later!
